LA Zine Fest 2014

The 3rd annual 2014 LA Zine Fest migrated a bit Westward this year as it overtook a covered parking garage at the sprawling Helms Bakery complex in Downtown Culver City — featuring over 175 zine exhibitors from all crevices of the greater Southland area and beyond.

To quote the organization’s own website:

L.A. Zine Fest is organized by a collective of zine-enthusiasts dedicated to promoting zine culture as a means to connect the pre-exisiting communities in L.A.–artistic or otherwise. We aim to create opportunities for people to share self-published works and host events that encourage ideas to spill out onto paper in pictures and words.”

LA Zine Fest was founded by a collective of 5 artists: Bianca Barragan, Simon Sotelo, Kenzo Martinez, Meredith Wallace, and Rhea Tepplim.

The first annual fest was held in 2012 at the Spring Arts Tower (located above The Last Bookstore) in Downtown LA. Last year it dropped anchor at the Ukranian Cultural Center in East Hollywood. To have witnessed this fest grow and refine itself over the past 3 years is quite inspiring. It’s a well organized affair that is able to corral hundreds of zine creators and curators under one roof. (No easy feat, one would imagine.) Not to mention the various workshops, readings & panels that happen concurrently throughout the day.

The perfect way to spend a sun drenched Sunday in Los Angeles, if you ask me!
